Purpose

The mission of Firefly Sisterhood is to facilitate and foster intentional one-to-one connections between individuals diagnosed with breast cancer and those already on the journey. Our services (“Services”) include but are not limited to:

  • The Firefly Sisterhood One-to-One program (“Program”) to help individuals who are diagnosed with breast cancer connect with volunteers who are breast cancer survivors;
  • Educational webinars, seminars and events;
  • Firefly Sisterhood newsletters and website.

Firefly Sisterhood is committed to responsible information handling practices. This Privacy Policy (“Privacy Policy”) applies to Firefly Sisterhood’s collection and use of personal information and non-personal information that Firefly Sisterhood may obtain when you contact us, visit our website, or use our Services. In this Privacy Policy, we sometimes refer to Firefly Sisterhood as “we” “us” or “our,” and to individuals who visit website or use our Services as “you” and “your”. We refer to women seeking support who participate in our Program as “Support Seekers” and to breast cancer survivors who serve as mentors in the Program as “Peer Mentor Guides.”

Firefly Sisterhood reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to modify, alter or otherwise update this Privacy Policy at any time. You will be notified of changes to the Privacy Policy via a notation next to the link to the Privacy Policy from the main page of the website stating that the Privacy Policy is new and the date on which it was updated. The last date on which the Privacy Policy was updated was March 2024. By continuing to use this website after changes to the Privacy Policy are posted, you agree to these modifications, alterations and/or updates.

Information We Collect

You can visit and browse this website without telling us who you are or revealing any Personal Information (as defined below). If you choose only to look at the website and do not wish to participate in the Program, you need not provide any Personal Information.

We collect personal information to provide our Services as well as some non-personal information about visitors to our website. The term “Personal Information” generally includes but is not limited to: (1) information that can be used to determine, distinguish or trace an individual’s identity, such as name, email address, address, phone number, age, or date of birth, and (2) any other information that is linked or linkable to an individual, such as medical and employment information. We may obtain Personal Information about you only if you elect to give us that information. We may also collect information or data in a form that does not, by itself, permit us to associate it with any specific individual. For the purposes of this Privacy Policy, we refer to this as “Non-Personal Information.” Non-Personal Information includes but is not limited to information we collect regarding visitors to our website to help us provide more useful information to visitors and Program Participants, and to understand which parts of and our Services are of most interest. We collect Personal Information and Non-Personal Information in the following ways:

We may request Personal Information to participate in the Program, provide you our Services, enable you to purchase goods or services available on our website, or donate online. Types of Personal Information we may ask you to provide may include your name, address, zip code, telephone number, occupation, email address, credit card information, and/or breast cancer diagnosis. We use a third-party application for storage of your Personal Information and online donations and do not keep any credit card information or other Personal Information on our website. To participate in our Program, we ask you to complete an application online that includes some of the above Personal Information. If you apply to participate in the Program, to help us determine if you can participate and match you with a Support Seeker or Peer Mentor Guide, we may contact you to request additional Personal Information including but not limited to confirming your age and that you are over 21, confirming that you have been diagnosed with or are a survivor of breast cancer, the stage of breast cancer, your marital status, and the number and ages of any children. We may also collect feedback, including Personal Information, from Program Participants and others who apply for or use our Services to help us improve and tailor our Services to meet your needs.

When you apply to participate in our Program, we reserve the right to ask about your personal history including whether you have been convicted of breaking and entering, fraud, theft, abuse of a child, spouse or vulnerable adult, a crime involving violence, including rape, sexual assault, or homicide; or a felony drug-related offense. If you answer in the affirmative, with your prior consent, we will perform or engage a third-party provider to perform a background check and will use the background check results and additional information that we may request from you to determine whether we can accept you in the Program. Firefly Sisterhood reserves the right to not to accept an applicant for the Program for any reason, including refusing a background check or having a criminal conviction.

Cookies and Other Technologies; Do Not Track

When you visit our website, we use “cookies” and other technologies to collect data that allows us to understand and improve the usability of our website. Such information is called a “Submission.” We do not collect Submissions constituting confidential information from you, except to the extent that you submit them to us via email or other means. Firefly Sisterhood does not want to receive confidential or proprietary information from you through the website, email, or other means. Therefore, any Submission sent to Firefly Sisterhood will be deemed NOT to be confidential. By sending Firefly Sisterhood any Submission, you grant us an unrestricted, irrevocable and fully paid-up license to use, copy, reproduce, publish, upload, post, transmit, distribute, publicly display, perform, modify, create derivative works from, and otherwise freely use, that Submission. How We Use the Information We Collect

We use Personal Information collected online to provide and administer our Program and Services, in order to comply with a legal obligation, to enforce the Program Agreement, to protect our rights or the rights of other parties such as Program Participants, and to provide information to you, such as sending communications and newsletters. We will not sell, disclose, or rent the Personal Information we collect to any third party for their use in marketing or selling their own products or services.

Firefly Sisterhood will retain and use your Personal Information for the purposes for which such Personal Information is collected. Firefly Sisterhood will establish minimum and maximum retention periods based upon the type of information collected (i.e., sensitivity), the intended purposes, and as otherwise may be legally required.

Disclosure to Third Parties

Firefly Sisterhood may need to share Personal Information with third parties in limited circumstances. For example, we may provide Personal Information to third parties to perform services such as informing you about upcoming events, volunteer opportunities, fundraising and partner-related product opportunities benefiting Firefly Sisterhood, breast health/breast cancer information or processing credit card payments or maintaining or hosting our website or content available on our website.

If a third party is engaged for these purposes, such third parties shall be obligated to maintain the confidentiality of Personal Information and are not authorized to use Personal Information for any purpose other than providing those services.

It may be necessary for Firefly Sisterhood to disclose your Personal Information, if we determine that law; legal process or litigation requires disclosure. We may disclose your Personal Information, if we deem it necessary in order to comply with a legal obligation, enforce the terms of the Program Agreement, or to protect our rights or the rights of a Program Participant.

Our CRM provider uses reasonable security measures to protect Personal and Non-Personal Information that is maintained on our CRM provider’s servers, including technology, physical, and administrative security measures to limit access and use to authorized persons, and prevent an intruder from obtaining the information. In addition, it may be impossible to completely delete your information without some residual information remaining because of backups.

Regarding Children, Teens and Individuals Under Age 18

Firefly Sisterhood is very concerned about protecting the privacy of children and teens. We do not intend to collect any Personal Information from anyone under age 13. If a parent or guardian learns that a child under 13 has provided Firefly Sisterhood with Personal Information, the parent or guardian of that child should contact us immediately at info@fireflysisterhood.org so that we can delete this information from our files.

Individuals under age 18 are not eligible to participate in the Program unless they have parental consent. However, individuals between ages 13 and 18 who have been diagnosed with breast cancer are eligible to use our other Services without parental consent.

Your Opt-Out Choice

If you have applied or registered for the Program or other Services, Firefly Sisterhood may from time to time send you promotional information about our Services that we think you may find useful. If you wish to opt-out of receiving promotional mailings or email communications from us, you may do so by clicking on the unsubscribe link in our email communications to you or by emailing your request to Firefly Sisterhood at info@fireflysisterhood.org. Please note that opting out of receiving promotional mailings or email will not affect your receipt of Service-related, transactional, or legal communication via mail or email in accordance with the terms of this Privacy Policy.

Applicable Law

This Privacy Policy shall be governed by, and construed and enforced in accordance with, the laws of the State of Minnesota, without giving effect to any principles of conflicts of laws. You expressly agree that the exclusive jurisdiction for any claim or action arising out of or relating to this Privacy Policy, your participation in the Program or Services, or your use of this website shall be filed only in the state or federal courts located in the State of Minnesota, and you further agree and submit to the exercise of personal jurisdiction of such courts for the purpose of litigating any such claim or action.
